Battle of the Sexes (after YBC, 28th August 2004)
Every now and then, something happens that you feel you just have to post because it shows promise. It also may prove a point.
After YBC today, Sherbie partnered up with Dave Williams, and J.J. partnered up with Kayleigh Bridges, before playing three games of bowling, which turned into a battle of the sexes. Sherbie and Dave, who may be partnered for the doubles in the NAYBC Nationals next year, didn't hold anything back, scoring 1138 between them over these three games, an average of just under 190 between them. For the record, Dave rolled a 174, 177 and 190 for a 541, while Sherbie rolled a 213, 191 and 193 for a 597 series. This partnership with this kind of scoring could prove to be quite a force in the Nationals next year.
Despite this, the "lasses" put up a courageous fight, with J.J. rolling a 539 series. In the last game, she looked to be on course for a PB, and didn't disappoint us, by hitting every spare and also by shooting a number of strikes to end with a 231. Unfortunately, Kayleigh didn't score as well as was needed to beat the lads, managing a 396, which was quite good considering she had only begun using a reactive fingertip ball this morning. No doubt her scores will begin to rise considerably as she gets used to her new equipment.
No doubt another battle of the sexes will occur sometime later this season, and it'll probably be posted on here, so look out for it!
Tricky places 9th in the Bowlers Club (Bowlers Club Tournament in Nottingham, 27th June 2004)
This year Tricky has been taking part in the Bowlers Club, involving a trip to Nottingham every two months or so. In the most recent event, he came 9th out of 36 competitors. He was bowling in Division B.
The England scouts were watching him for a couple of the games, as he managed to roll his tournament high game of 250 in the third game against Sean Croke (who recently placed 2nd in the NAYBC Nationals in the Graduate division, and is a Team England member), who only rolled a 245. The game that followed saw Croke roll a 197 while Tricky roll a 191. If he keeps this up, we might be seeing him on the England team!! It's amazing to think he can still roll these scores when he spends most of his time working (I don't think we've seen him actually bowling at the YBC for months- Sherb).
Overall, Tricky rolled a score of 1859 over 10 games, a very respectable 185.9 average. Our congratulations go to Tricky for his great performance and hope the next meeting will be even better.
Presentation Time (Torbay YBC AGM, 19th June 2004)
The AGM was a time of reports, and also presentations for the results of the league. Vad had topped the majority of the male tables (although other people, such as Sherbie and Tricky had beaten the vast majority of his scores, he had been present for the majority, if not every week, of the league, while the others had not been present for at least half), but was only allowed to take away the recognition for the High Male Scratch Game and Male High Average (out of fairness to all the other bowlers). Although Sherbie had improved by a massive 32 pins in terms of average since the previous league, it was not enough to win the Most Improved Bowler award (which instead went to Philip Layland, who had improved his average by 34 pins). J.J. won the medal for High Female Handicap Game.
Presentations for the top three teams followed. Vad missed out on a trophy by 1 point...... to fellow Splitpins teammates Sherbie and Tricky, who came third (other members of the "trio" were Jamie Goswell and Jason Hellier. Don't ask about what happened to the trio for it to get four members, it was probably due to the regular absences of both Tricky and Jason) under the name of "R Team". J.J. came second with her team.
The AGM was rounded off by the election of the new players representatives for the coming year. The position of male rep. was to be a vote between Sherbie and Tricky, where Sherbie won by 17 votes to 11, and therefore will be the player representative along with Kylie Wills.
